Blog 02 | The Myth of Control: The Power of Your Reaction
We live in a world obsessed with planning. Our calendars are full, our goals are sharp, and we anxiously try to maintain a grip on the future. But sooner or later, life reminds us of a harsh, inescapable truth: everything happens to you.
A sudden change at work, a relationship that unexpectedly ends, or simply a flat tire when it is pouring rain outside. You never have complete control over external circumstances. But amidst that chaos, there is good news. You do have absolute control over something much more important: the way you deal with those circumstances.
The trap of the automatic pilot
When things go wrong, we instinctively shoot into resistance. We get angry, we complain, or we feel like the victim of the situation. This is a very logical, human reaction. However, it is also a reaction that consumes an enormous amount of energy. It is energy that you unconsciously misuse to fight against the reality of this moment.
The traffic jam does not dissolve because you slam your steering wheel. The situation does not change because of your frustration. Resistance is fighting against what already is, and in that fight, you always lose to reality.
Your superpower: The space between
Between the event and your automatic reaction lies a very small, precious moment of choice. The psychologist Viktor Frankl once wrote about this: "In that space lies our freedom to choose our reaction."
If you learn not to react immediately, but to consciously step into that space between, everything changes. You transform from being a plaything of circumstances to the director of your own inner life. You stop reacting from the first emotional impulse, and start acting from a place of inner peace and clarity. This is the core of psychological flexibility and ancient Stoicism: it is not things themselves that upset us, but our judgment about those things.
Finding peace in the chaos
This does not mean that you have to like or view everything that happens as positive. It does mean that you stop wasting energy on things you cannot change anyway. Acceptance is not weakness or surrender; it is the only healthy starting point for effective action. As soon as you accept what is, space immediately opens up in your mind to look at what the best next step is.
Life happens to you, but you determine the direction.
